Welcome to JYS!
Dear JYS Community:
Sweet Briar College is on a path of change and rejuvenation for its future with a new model for its curriculum of the liberal arts. As you are aware, with any new plans come tough decisions. Sweet Briar has decided to discontinue its in-house study abroad program in Seville, Spain (JYS in Seville, previously known as the Junior Year in Spain program).
The program has been running since 1983 and survived the almost closing of the institution, however due to the declining enrollment Sweet Briar will end operations of the JYS program this December 2017, finishing out this of the Fall term for current students.
Sweet Briar is evaluating and expanding the number of study abroad opportunities offered to students across the board, including Spanish language programs. This is in keeping with the new curriculum initiatives that encourage students to look at how they become global citizens and leaders.
JYS has over 2,000 alumni and worked with many of the top higher education institutions in the United States. Our long-standing agreement and collaboration with the University of Seville has been excellent. Sweet Briar recognizes and appreciates all of the amazing accomplishments of JYS, its students, staff, professors, and partner institutions along with the program’s contributions to study abroad.
Current students of the program will finish out the semester without any impact to their JYS experience. The program is working with its partner institutions to assist any year-long students in finding a new home for spring 2018. Prospective applicants have also been informed they will need to seek new opportunities.
This change in no way affects the JYF in Paris program and it will continue to provide semester and yearlong study abroad opportunities for French language immersion to students around the United States.
Decisions like these are difficult to make, and we will be grateful for your understanding as we look ahead to building more vibrant programming. Please know that all JYS alumni will always be welcomed as valued members of the Sweet Briar community.
For any questions or concerns, please email: firstname.lastname@example.org.

¡Bienvenidos a JYS in SEVILLE!
JYS in SEVILLE (JYS), is an intensive academic immersion study abroad program sponsored by Sweet Briar College in Seville, Spain. Founded in 1983, JYS has provided students from a variety of majors the opportunity to improve their Spanish language skills, build their cultural competencies, broaden their international perspectives, and expand their knowledge and academic interests.
The program is open to men and women in any field of study in good standing at any accredited four-year institution in the United States for a semester (spring or fall), academic year, or summer.
As a semester or yearlong student…
JYS is an immersion program dedicated to experiential learning, so you will live with a host family, take all of your courses in Spanish, attend the University of Seville, and live like a local for the duration of your studies in Spain. You will also be encouraged to get involved in the local community while in Seville. Take the time to pursue internships and volunteer opportunities in a field of your choosing, and also enjoy trying classes in local cooking, flamenco dancing, guitar, choir, and others. We set the bar high and challenge our students to maximize their time abroad by committing to speak Spanish regularly.
